Canadian Chef Of The Year Rests on Victoria's Laurels

Victoria, BC— Dining in BC’s capital is about to reach new heights at the city’s original waterfront hotel. Ian Powell, Managing Director and General Manager of the Laurel Point Inn announces the appointment of Brad Horen as Executive Chef.

“Chef Horen is well known in culinary circles for his roles as executive chef of Calgary’s Catch Seafood Restaurant, and executive sous chef at the Calgary Westin and the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton,” says Powell. “The rest of Canada will recognize him for his mentorship role on the Food Network’s Next Great Chef. We are truly honoured to present his talents to diners in Victoria.”

Horen’s key philosophies are to use fresh, local ingredients, to inspire excellence in his team, and to keep his edge through international competition. “I want to be a true motivator and lead by example,” he says. “I’m really passionate and particular about what we do.”

In addition to his participation with Culinary Team Alberta as captain, Horen competes internationally with the Canadian National Culinary Team – 2005’s World Culinary grande prix champions and 2006 gold medalists in Luxembourg. Under his leadership as Executive Chef of Catch Restaurant was awarded the best new seafood restaurant in Canada by Enroute magazine.

In 2007, the Canadian Culinary Federation awarded Horen with the prestigious Canadian Chef of the Year title.

“Chef Horen is just the first of several upcoming announcements,” says Powell, who is working with designer Robert Leddingham to build a venue that will truly equal Horen’s talents. “This appointment is a key plank in our overall strategy to maximize potential of the Laurel Point Inn’s beautiful location, stunning architecture and dedicated colleagues.”

The Laurel Point Inn is a resort-style waterfront Victoria hotel located downtown on Victoria's Inner Harbour. 2007 Condé Nast Traveler rated the Laurel Point Inn as One of Canada's Top 25 Hotels.
